Week 1 of the Bear's season is gone.
I woke up yesterday giddy with the anticipation of a new season. I woke up this morning a little worried but still full of hope.
It was not an especially good showing.
Devin Hester looks decent as a wideout. I still wonder if he will be truly effective as a punt returner.
Matt Forte had some flashes of brilliance but I don't think he got his touches early enough in the game to be effective.
Earl Bennett will work out, I think. He doesn't run his routes especially well yet and he dropped a few balls but when he caught it he knew what to do after the catch.
And what to say about Jay Cutler? He is my quarterback. I do not have the benefit of game film to know how many of his interceptions were bad routes and how many were bad throws. My gut says its 2-2. His post game comments don't really tell us anything. He seemed annoyed at the loss and referred to the team as "we" which is a good sign. Time will tell. I still reserve judgment on him. I put my eggs in the Rex Grossman basket a little too easily and am still hurting because of it.
Coach Smith is a great man. In his post game comments he didn't make excuses but he also didn't sugar coat it. I love his philosophy that your defense is only good when they produce takeaways.
In other news, now that I have to follow three different teams, both Kyle Orton (Broncos) and Thomas Jones (Jets) got wins today. Orton wasn't especially good in his game, the game winner being a broken play with a lucky bounce, but he was exactly what you expect from him. I didn't get to see the Jets game but Jones' stat line looked pretty good. With a rookie quarterback even...
I doubt I will watch the Broncos or Jets at all this year but I like both of these guys so I will definitely keep an eye on how they do. They will always be Bears to me.
I love me some football. Let's go BEARS! It was a rough day yesterday but the team is still a winner and should do well this season.
